Roman

Romans were initially used in Rome. In ancient times, particularly during the construction of the famous Coliseum, the Italian city was extremely dusty and the lack of modern paved roads only made the situation worse. Many Romans used to travel either by foot or horse (or donkey) and cart. The carts combined with the cobbles, heat and a light wind made for a very uncomfortable atmosphere as dust was blown all over the place. Imagine slaving over a hot stove to create the perfect Spaghetti Bolognese, only to get your meal covered in dust by the time you’d poured yourself a glass of red! The Romans solution to this was to hang damp pieces of cloth from their window to stop the dust entering their homes, and the first Roman Blind was born.

It wasn’t long before they took off on a commercial scale. As the damp cloth trend caught on, savvy entrepreneurs realised the potential and began to mass produce with all different types of patterns and decorations. Roman women, just like 21st century women, took much pride in their homes and would spend large amounts of time choosing the correct design for their abode.

As well as being used to prevent dust entering the home, the Romans also used them to keep themselves shaded from the sun. Whilst today a blind will still do this, they can also be purchased with insulation fitted, which means you aren’t blinded by the sun but can still feel the benefits of a hot day. Add to this the fact that this is energy efficient and in turn will save you money on heating and cooling costs, there really isn’t a down-side to fitting a pair of Romans.

Not only do they come in different styles and designs, but they also come in a wide variety of materials. Although the origins of Romans lay in cloth, the use of wood – particularly bamboo, is becoming a more attractive proposition for home owners. The idea behind this is simple; cleaning cloth blinds is an extremely tiresome process. Wood on the other hand, can easily be wiped down and given a quick spray, meaning that cleaning your blind doesn’t take up too much of your precious time. Romans can be a beautiful addition to nearly any home.  They are extremely easy to fit. Most blinds come readily packed with all the screws and other things needed for installation as well as step-by-step instructions. In a hurry? No bother – the majority of blind companies also offer a fitting service too, which surely makes this the most convenient and practical furnishing for any homeowner.

Although times have changed, the purpose remains the same. The only difference is that there are now more varieties than ever.
